Eyesight Vs Vision

One of the common sight is kids with mobile phone or ipad or TV watching cartoons so parents can focus on some other work. Visit a kindergarten, school or park these days and you will find more and more kids with spectacles. Add a picky eater to this high screen time and you have the problem of poor vision(literally and figuratively too!). That was story of little Raina, who was 4. Glued to the iPad screen and very picky eater. We sat with her and her mom and explained how eyes work and colours in fruits and vegetables affect the eyes. We made games with her and Raina learnt creatively how she can help her eyes with magic colours in fruits. Today she is 10, with great eye sight unlike her classmates whose spectacles are getting thicker every year.

Though the real explanation is not so simple.

Today nearly 1 in 4 kids have vision problem. Most of children with learning difficulties have an undetected vision problem. Vision affects hand eye coordination, depth perception, eye tracking ability.

Parents sometimes come to us because their child failed a routine vision exam or are constantly addicted to screen. Very young children can't verbally express eyesight struggles well, but parents can look for symptoms. Some of the symptoms like frequent eye rubbing could mean that he or she has a vision problem. Sensitivity to light, excessive tearing, developing headaches and nausea.

Little Anuj’s eyes were turning dry and getting stuck, and the condition was worsening every day. His parents suspected their 2-year-old might have some eye infection. So they took him to a doctor, who discovered that he was spending more time seeing rhymes and cartoons on mobile phone. They signed up with Healthier team and met us to learn on food, nutrition, physical activity, creative work etc which they can help their child with. Within a month, the dryness in eyes got solved, screen time went down, clever ways to incorporate nutrition daily helped Anuj to recover fast.

Children who spend more time outdoors are less likely to have weaker eye sight. Two hours a day outside can mitigate the weak eye sight risk. As more physical exercise a kid has, more open they will be to healthier food when they are hungry. But parental anxiety, demanding study time and the rise of electronic entertainment are increasingly keeping children indoors.

Did you know that about 80 percent of what children learn in school is taught visually? That means if your child has an uncorrected vision problem, it could severely affect his or her development.
