Most of us enjoy the change of seasons. The winter’s chill in air and spring flowers bring a sense of wonder. Fall offers the beauty of changing leaves. Summer welcomes warm lazy days in pool. Does the change of seasons mean we’re more susceptible to colds, flu or other respiratory problems?

Kirit S suffered a discreet tickle in the throat to a relentless cold, coughing and fever. But these dramatic temperature changes aren't the direct cause of these illnesses.

Being out there in cold does not give us a cold. We have to be infected by a virus to catch a cold. Being out there in cold does limit our nasal hair and mucus’s ability to catch and stop the germs coming into our nose. Also when it’s cold outside, we tend to spend more time together indoors. The likelihood is that when we are indoors with others, we are more likely to be exposed to germs from others who may already have the sniffles. Also good ventilation with high relative humidity renders the influenza A virus inactive. So we recommended Kirit to spend time in medium humidity room with windows for cross ventilation.

We suggested a combination of good nutrition, everyday exercise, sleep and rested mind and body to have positive impact on immunity. Within few days of change in lifestyle, he could recover from sore throat and he has felt healthy with every season change. I forgot to mention, he is 76 years old and does not need to visit a doctor for fever, sinusitis and cough-cold. He follows Healthier advice and is happy with the results.

Help protect yourself against infection and boost your immunity by including these nutrients in your eating plan. Protein is part of the body's defense mechanism. Your body also produces proteins when you sleep that help your body fight infection. For this reason, lack of sleep reduces your immune defenses.

Other nutrients, including vitamin B6, folate, selenium, iron, as well as prebiotics and probiotics also influence immune response.

Learn from the Healthier experts, on how to include these in creative ways in your everyday food and increase your immunity to fight any cold, cough and fever.
